San Martinho Beach Club™ is situated 180km north of Maputo and 3km from the Bilene Airport. South Africans will find it an easy drive (8 hours) from Johannesburg.

Traveling By Air

Fly to Bilene – Co-ordinates (S25 15.959 E33 14.392) Altitude 159 ft

Although there are no commercial flights to Bilene, chartered or private planes are welcome. Bilene has an airfield with a paved 690 meter runway (01/19) suitable for daylight use in VFR conditions. There is secure parking but no fuel or any navigation aids. There are the usual landing fees, navigation fees, parking fees and passenger taxes to pay in US dollars. Customs and Immigration must be cleared at Maputo. There are currently steps being taken for Bilene to be upgraded to an international airport which will allow for direct flights from SA.

There are various flights and airlines offering direct flights to Maputo from Durban, Addis Ababa, Nairobi, Dar Es Salaam, Harare, Johannesburg, Lilongwe, Doha and Istanbul.

Traveling By Road

Directions from Gauteng

  1. Travel on the N4 towards Nelspruit.
  2. Travel from Nelspruit to Komatiepoort on the N4
  3. After Komatiepoort (on the left) is the last petrol station before the border. It is a good idea to fill up your vehicle. There is also a small supermarket which sells necessities. Please make sure you have the following items which can be purchase at the supermarket: a yellow on blue triangle (when towing) and two red triangles that need to be in your vehicle and not packed away. You will also need 2 reflective jackets, hang these on the back of the driver and passengers seats. A fire extinguisher need to be available in the vehicle and not packed away. Foreign currency can also be exchange at this shopping complex. Third Party Insurance is law and can also be bought here.
  4. Continue to SA Border post, all travellers need to get their passports stamped.
  5. Continue to the Mozambican Border post (S 25°26´43.93″ / E 31°59´15.27″). It is advisable to stop at GA Global Alliance. Complete a temporary import permit for your vehicle and declare all laptops (no need to declare personal items on this list). This form is obtainable free of charge. Have your passport, car import and gate pass stamped.
  6. Travel on the EN 4 towards Maputo.
  7. At the first Toll Gate (S 25°38´40.63″ / E 31°13´05.22″) you need to pay the fee in Rands, Mets or USD. Pay in Mets if possible because they’ll be able to give you change when paying in the local currency.
  8. Continue to Maputo. Please note the speed limit is 120km per hour but strictly adhere to any changes in the speed limit. If you spot a round white sign that reads 60km/h that has been crossed out it means you can go 120km/h. Remember that every passenger needs to wear their seatbelts.
  9. Enter Maputo and turn left (S 25°57´13.57″ / E 32°27´37.34″) towards Maputo city. An easy alternative is to cross over the Matola River turn left on the ring road. You will get onto the EN4 again after the Stadium. Continue till Marracuene (S 25°24´33.90″ / E 32°47´57.92″) and from there continue from point 18 onwards
  10. Continue to Maputo Toll Gate (S 25°55´50.71″ / E 32°30´57.14″). Pay the fee in Rands, Mets or USD. Pay in Mets if possible because they’ll be able to give you change when paying in the local currency.
  11. Continue till you find a board that turns left to Xai-Xai (S 25°56´37.09″/ E2°32´29.60″).
  12. Travel on this road EN4 until the first traffic circle (S 25°56´04.27″ / E 32°33´01.65″) and continue on the EN4.
  13. You’ll eventually notice the Maputo airport on the right. Continue till you enter the second traffic circle (S 25°52´37.04″ / E 32°34´00.40″) stay on the EN4.
  14. Police Check (S 25°50´41.61″ / E 32°34´06.65″). When you are stopped by Police officers please remember the following:
    • Have your valid driver’s licence available
    • Have all the required stickers on your vehicle
    • Have the two red triangles in your vehicle and not packed away
    • Have your Third Party Insurance papers and vehicle papers available
    • All passengers must wear their safety belts.
    • You will also need 2 reflective jackets – hang these on the back of the driver and passengers seats.
    • A fire extinguisher need to be available in the vehicle and not packed away.
    • Be friendly (you are visitors in their country).
    • If they want to fine you insist on a receipt.
  15. Continue on the EN4 to the town of Marracuene (S 25°24´33.90″ / E 32°47´57.92″). When driving through towns the speed limit is 60km/h
  16. Continue on the EN4. About 80km out of Maputo you will notice a Shell Ultra City on your right. This is a small restaurant and toilets available.
  17. Continue to the Town of Manhica (S 25°24´33.90″ / E 32°47´57.92″)
  18. Continue to the town of Macia (S 25°01´57.90″ / E 33°05´28.27″). If you’d like to buy fresh fruit now is a good time. The USafe shop sells fruit much cheaper than in Bilene.
  19. At Macia please look for the Bilene turn off board S 25°01´38.14″ / E 33°05´46.21″ and turn right into the 408. Travel about 33km to Bilene.
  20. When you enter Bilene town stay left and follow the road. At the T-junction, turn left and follow the road to the resort (S 25°16´44.00″ / E 33°15´53.09″). There are many sign boards giving you direction to the resort.

Direction from Durban (via Swaziland)

  1. Travel towards Richards Bay.
  2. Travel in the direction of Pongola.
  3. Before Pongola town take the turn off right towards Golela border post (SS27°8´59.46″ / E 31°50´18.49″)
  4. Enter Swaziland. At the traffic circle (S 27°18´30.15″ / E 31°53´16.52″) keep heading straight.
  5. Bid Bend is the next check point (S 26°41´58.63″ / E 31°50´21.07″)
  6. Continue until the Goba border for Mozambique (S 26°15´25.85″ / E 32°05´04.47″). It is advisable to stop at GA Global Alliance. Complete a temporary import permit for your vehicle and declare all laptops (no need to declare personal items on this list). This form is obtainable free of charge. Have your passport, car import and gate pass stamped.
  7. Next checkpoint it a T-junction (S 26°00´56.70″ / E 32°10´01.19″) where you should turn right.
  8. Continue towards Maputo. Please keep to the speed limit and ensure that every passenger wears a seatbelt.
  9. Continue to Maputo Toll Gate (S 25º55´50.71″ / E 32º30´57.14″). You need to pay the fee in Rands, Mets or USD. Pay in Mets if possible because they’ll be able to give you change when paying in the local currency.
  10. Continue till you find a board that turns left to Xai-Xai (S 25º56´128″/E 32º27´361″).
  11. Travel on the EN4 till the first traffic circle (S 25º56´04.27″ / E 32º33´01.65″) and continue on the EN4.
  12. You’ll eventually notice the Maputo airport on the right. Continue till you enter the second traffic circle (S 25º52´37.04″ / E 32º34´00.40″) stay on the EN4.

Directions from Motola Toll

  1. At the Motola toll you can only pay with Meticais.
  2. A couple of kms after the tollgate you will get a slipway to turn left, saying Xai Xai.
  3. Turn left and keep on this road following the signs to Xai Xai – Route EN4.
  4. The route will lead past the main towns of: Marracuene, Manhica for ±165Km to a town called Macia (BP on left).
  5. At Macia turn right off the main road, travel ± 32km to Bilene.
